Submarine reindeer

The HMS Trident was a British submarine. Over the course of World War II it sunk several German ships while patrolling the North Sea. And one of its crew members was a reindeer.

The reindeer was a diplomatic gift from the Russians. British submarines often docked at Russian Shipyard Number 10 in Polyarny, and I’m guessing that’s when the Trident picked up its unusual passenger – because they named her “Pollyanna.”

Pollyanna stayed on board until the submarine returned to Britain, at which point she was transferred to a local zoo.
