From the archives: The Sahara

A marathon across the Sahara, an artificial river underneath the Sahara, the ancient green Sahara, and the wall of trees meant to check the desert’s advance.

The Marathon of the Sands in Morocco crosses 250km of the Sahara Desert.

The Great Man-Made River carries millions of litres of water to Libya daily underneath the Sahara.

For four thousand years the Sahara was green, covered in rivers, lakes, trees, savannah, and pre-historic societies that are now all gone.

The Sahara Desert consumes more land every year. The Great Green Wall is being planted to stop it.
