From the archives: Names and the nameless

How we know Kofi Annan was born on Friday, the first named author in history, the peculiar names of American pilgrims, and the names of the biblical nameless.

Like most Akan from Ghana, former UN Secretary-General Kofi Annan is named for the circumstances of his birth.


Who were the three wise men? Abel’s wife? Jesus’ sister? These are the biblical nameless.


Enheduanna, daughter of Sargon the Great, was the first named author in history.
