Sole survivor

On Christmas Eve 1971, a plane out of Lima crashed into the Amazon rainforest. Ninety-one people died, but one survived.

LANSA Flight 508 out of Lima was hit by lightning while flying over the Amazon rainforest. The plane had ninety-two people on board, and ninety-one of those died on impact. The sole survivor: Juliane Koepcke.

Koepcke had fallen 3km down, broker her collar bone, and sustained many other injuries. Nevertheless, she trekked through the forest for ten days and made it out alive and well.

One of her first acts upon finding a boat and fuel was to pour the gasoline onto her arm to remove the thirty-five maggots that were living under the skin. Ew!
